A Petition from a Monk

On 27 November, 2023 during Epigraphy & Papyrology Seminar at Faculty of Archaeology, University of Warsaw W.G. Claytor & E. Wipszycka-Bravo delivered together a seminar paper “A Petition from a Monk”.

General abstract: We presented a fragmentary fourth-century petition from a monk, which was discovered during the University of Michigan excavations of Karanis. The petitioner identifies himself as an apotaktikos monachos from the nome capital Arsinoe, and we tried to reconstruct the wording of the petition’s prooemium, in addition to discussing its archaeological context and what it contributes to our knowledge of such “apotactic” communities in early Egyptian monasticism.
